How do I get my loved one's nursing home records?

This is a simple question with a sometimes murky answer. If your loved one is living and competent, generally your loved one can sign an authorization that allows you to get a copy of the records. If your loved one is living and incompetent, generally, your loved one's power of attorney will sign a medical records authorization to granting you access to the records. If your loved one is deceased, generally, the personal representative or special administrator of your loved one's estate will sign an authorization allowing release of the records.
